Description

The word scale is tricky. It invites many definitions, orientations and connections to ourselves, our surroundings and our tools. However, to think of scale as solely technical is reductive and omits the relations, feelings and beliefs that come with such measurements and images. In this book, eight authors come together to challenge our conventions and understanding of scale as grounded in the human. In their texts, ๐—”๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ฎ ๐—•๐—ฎ๐˜‡๐—ฑ๐˜†๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜ƒ๐—ฎ, ๐—ฅ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ท๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐—ต ๐—ฆ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด๐—ต ๐——๐—ต๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ถ๐˜„๐—ฎ๐—น, ๐—”๐—ป๐˜๐—ต๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜† ๐——๐—ผ๐˜„๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜†, ๐—™๐—ฅ๐—”๐—จ๐—— (Audrey Samson & Francisco Gallardo), ๐—–๐—ต๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐˜€ ๐—Ÿ๐—ฒ๐—ฒ, ๐—๐˜‚๐˜€๐˜€๐—ถ ๐—ฃ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ธ๐—ธ๐—ฎ and ๐—Ÿ๐—ฎ๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฎ ๐—ง๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ฑ๐—ถ expand our understanding of scale to the more-than-human, trace its movements and frictions through histories, and question the way scale generates political power. Demonstrating how we can think with scale, they introduce us to scalar thinking, its urgency in our socio-technical present and its potential for making new maps, new representations and new kinds of measurements.

a model, a map, a fiction + Tactics&Practice #14: Scale

This reader reflects back the shared theme of transmedialeโ€™s 2023 festival edition "a model, a map, a fiction" and of Aksiomaโ€™s programme "tactics&practice #14: Scale" and came together from a common desire to think collectively about how measurements and maps create both politics and feelings in the world.

In this podcast series artists, anthropologists and academic researchers engage in a dialogue about their latest projects in order to make us think outside the human scale. Listeners will be acquainted with intelligent materials, demonic energy infrastructures, local informal networks of data distribution and autonomous weapon systems, and will thereby discover that new paradigms and scales are needed to better understand โ€“ and possibly subvert โ€“ the world we live in.
